Defence Against the Dark Arts
Jack Mason sat at his desk patiently waiting for his year three class, when he groaned. Great. His first lesson with Nova scrutinising his every move. Or shadowing as some liked to call it. Mason looked up at the door as it was opened. He watched Nova strut in as if he owned the classroom. The man winked at him, then perched himself on the window sill, observing the empty classroom studiously. Mason recognised that gaze, but just shook his head at the absurdity.
A couple of minutes of uncomfortable silence later, the first bell rang and Mason started to hear voices from outside his classroom. He flicked his wand at the door, which opened, and Gryffindor and Slytherin students alike entered. None of them spared Nova a glance, which surprised Mason, as it was the first time he'd shadowed one of their lessons.
Zada, Morfin, Carm and Nina were sitting at the back left hand corner and were all chatting amiably. Trent, Joshua and Karsca were sat closer to the front, but chatting no quieter than the other friendship groups. Brigette and Marie were, obviously, gossiping, and glaring slightly at the Gryffindor gossips every so often. Elsie, Donna and Leo were, obviously, gossiping, and glaring slightly at the Slytherin gossips every so often. Tobi and Kyli were also chatting away happily.
The second bell went and the class settled down into their seats as Mason stood up to begin the lesson. He was about to open his mouth to speak, when Cenizo pushed the, now shut door, open. "Sorry I'm late Sir." he said, eyes briefly flicking over to where Nova sat before sitting down next to Tobi with a confused and contemplative expression on his face.
Mason nodded, then started the lesson.
Half way into the double period, he began to feel like something was wrong. None of the students had noticed Nova, apart from when Cenizo had quickly looked over to where the man was perched. Mason had noted that Cenizo had, several times, looked back over to the window as if trying to see something that wasn't there.
He set the class their homework, due in after the winter holidays, then dismissed them. The noise in the classroom gradually lessened as all the pupils left. Mason turned to Nova as soon as the door was shut. "Why couldn't they see you?" he asked sternly, folding his arms across his chest.
Nova shrugged. "I used a disillusionment charm."
"No you didn't. I could see you."
"I know, I integrated your magical signature into the charm so that you could see me."
Mason had to use all his self-control to stop his jaw from dropping. "But...but...that's not b[zz]y possible. It's not even been invented yet!"
"... whoops! Really?" Nova asked. "I guess that's what being an unspeakable does for you." But Nova knew that was utter rubbish. He'd leant everything he knew when he was either training for his Auror Degree or when he joined ''The Agency''. He'd learned practically nothing in his time as an Unspeakable.
Mason took a deep breathe and sighed. Of course. Of course this was just one of Nova's 'top secret' spells from his days as an unspeakable. Any other doubts Mason had about the situation disappeared, and he let out the breath. But then his mind moved back to the moment when Cenizo had walked in and he tensed again. "Cenizo Verum saw you..." he said slowly.
"Yes he did. I admit I did modify the charm as he walked in. He must have spotted the spike of magic."
Mason frowned. "I highly doubt that Nova. I didn't even feel a magical spike. So it must've been extremely small; and for a boy who's magic has barely developed ... He can't be sensing magic spikes. He's a child for God's sake!"
"You can 'highly doubt' whatever you like Mason. You know my theory, so I won't bore you with the details." Nova said casually.
Mason sighed again and suddenly spotted a ring he'd never seen Nova wearing before, but he recognised it instantly. "Is that...?" he started staring at the ring. "Are you a Malfoy?" he asked accusingly.
"Hm? No. Their male line died out a few years ago. I thought you'd know that" Nova thought back to the events of that lunch time. It was all too easy to get out of the castle - apparating was good enough, the wards weren't what they should be - and then the stealing of the ring and dealing with the 'owner' had been no trouble either. Now all he had to do was give it back to who it belonged to...
"But now you've got me thinking about it, I do look a bit too similar to them..." Nova said, purposely ignoring the fact that Mason knew what the ring was. He frowned slightly. He had known some Malfoy at a very young age, and it worried him slightly that he'd chosen to look like him. He snapped his fingers, making sure it was original appearance that showed, and not just another random glamour that the agency had set. In his opinion, nothing felt as comfortable as his real self. A natural tan replaced the pale skin, smooth platinum changed to messy golden blonde, bright blue eyes again took over from the silver and his tall slender frame turned lithe and muscled, and he shrunk slightly in height, no longer one of the taller members of staff; in fact he was bordering on the shorter end.. He caught Mason staring at him like a goldfish, mouth open. Nova held up a hand. "Before you say anything Mason, can you answer this question with complete honesty. Does this green ribbon clash with my hair?"
There was a short silence before Mason laughed heartily. "Yeah." he replied, smiling at Nova for the first time. Mason flicked his wand at the ribbon which slowly turned from a dark green to a deep crimson. "Much more Gryffindor."
Nova smiled too. Yes. He was a Gryffindor.
