The sky was a dark stormy grey; rain was just longing to burst from the clouds. The students looked up from their last lesson of the year as a thunder clap echoed across the sky. The teacher followed the pupils’ gazes and nodded. “Okay girls, you can go inside. I want to see every single one of you in P6 in ten minutes. Otherwise you’ll all get detention.” The teacher disapparated, while the girls were left to struggle through the haze that was rain water.
“Hey Nina!” Kiara sneered, after casting an anti-rain spell. “Where are you going?”
Nina glared at the other girl, her hair already soaking wet. “I’m not too keen on detention thanks.”
Kiara put most of her weight on her right leg and looked at the nails on her left hand in a bored manner. “Well we’re,” she said, indicating to the band of girls around her, “not really ‘too keen’ on lessons.”
“ Good for you. But I’m going; bye.” But before she could run off, Kiara had grabbed her wrist and twisted sharply, causing pain to shoot through Nina’s arm.
“You’re not going anyway Kardakaz.” Kiara said venomously.
Nina glowered hatefully at her and tried to snake free, but Kiara held on tighter. “You don’t belong here Kardakaz. You’re not good enough for this place.”
“And you are(?!)” Nina replied.
“Shut up!” Kiara continued, “I wasn’t finished.”
“Oh, okay, so sorry(!) I’ll never do anything to offend you ever again(!)” Nina said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Kiara scowled, but re-started her monologue nonetheless. Nina, who was the sole audience to this speech, was blatantly ignoring it; putting all her efforts into trying to escape from Kiara’s grasp.
“Who the hell do you think you are Kardakaz!? You waltz into this school like you own the bloody place! Just cus you’re parents are rich and respected, doesn’t mean you deserve that too! You are in bloody second year! What the fu[zz] are you doing with us fourth years?! Huh?”
Nina went limp, and glared silently at the grass. ‘Bitch.’
Kiara grinned, thinking that she’d finally worn her down. Only to have Nina spit in her face. Kiara threw Nina away from her, exclaiming in disgust. Nina whipped her wand out of its holder and faced Kiara who was surrounded by worried friends.
“I’m fine.” Nina heard her insist. Then she watched as Kiara turned slowly to face her. “You think you can beat me Kardakaz?”
Nina stood her ground, not moving, not speaking.
“Huh. So that’s how it’s gunna be. It’s your own fault, you know Kardakaz. You’re so insistent for a fight . . . I’m gunna pound you to the ground.” With her speech over, Kiara sent a series of brutal spells towards Nina, who blocked them easily.
A slight frown flit across Kiara’s face, then it was masked as she continued the onslaught on Nina.
There was a gap in Kiara’s spell casting when she realised that Nina wasn’t struggling. She was about to say something, when she was nearly hit by Nina’s first spell. “I commend you there Kardakaz; didn’t see that one coming. But that was for the last time.” And they resumed their duel; each girl now sending an equal amount of curses, jinxes and spells.
The rain had lessened to a light drizzle, and Kiara was bursting with confidence. After all, she was two years ahead of Nina. There was almost a look of admiration when she was blasted back twenty feet by one of Nina’s spells. The expression was clouded by hatred, frustration and surprise, but it was still there. She hit the ground hard, but was unable to feel a thing.
One of Kiara’s friends screamed quietly. This was then followed by a volley of louder and more piercing screams; the girls were unable to believe what they’d just seen, but rushed over to Kiara’s side.
“You’ve killed her!” One of them accused Nina. “Why are you just standing there!?”
But Nina didn’t respond. All she could hear was blood rushing through her ears. ‘What have I done?!’
Nina was standing nervously outside a room. From inside she could here hysterical screeching and quiet sobbing. Then the sounds died down and the door opened. She looked in. The Headmaster was sitting behind his desk, arms crossed, staring at her sternly. “Come in Nina.” He said.
Nina entered and heard the door close behind her. There was no people in front of the desk. No chair either. She was expected to stand.
“What you did was incredibly dangerous. You seriously injured one of your class mates.”
“But-”
He held up a hand and Nina stopped. “Kiara is being treated as we speak, and I very much hope for your sake more than mine that she will survive. The Governors and I have discussed the matter greatly. We decided that it would be dangerous, at best, to keep you in this school.”
Nina gawped at him. He wasn’t being serious was he? Then she looked at his face and realised that he was. “Duh . . .eh, buh” she stuttered.
“I’m very sorry Miss. Kardakaz, but you will have to leave this school immediately. I do not want to see you in this school again. You are dismissed.”
Nina’s mother gazed at her regretfully, but looked away when Nina caught her eye. She had arrived to help Nina pack her things away and to take her home.
“We are . . . leaving for England tonight.” She told Nina. “I want you to have an education, and if you cannot come here, then you will have to go to Hogwarts. They will know you are not dangerous.”
Nina shrugged sadly, gave Carporthia one last fleeting glance, then continued walking.
