The Triwizard Tournament is a famous contest between the schools of Hogwarts, Véspeíre and Carporthia. It originated some 700 years ago as a friendly competition between the three schools. Each school takes turns hosting the Tournament, which takes place every three years. The judges for the Tournament include the heads of the three schools.
The Triwizard Tournament consists of two parts; a Senior Tournament for the upper school, year 5 and above, and a Mini Junior Tournament for the lower school, year 4 and below. The Senior Tournament consists of a series of tasks designed to test the champions in many different ways: their magical prowess, their daring, their powers of deduction, and their ability to cope with danger. Every time the Triwizard Tournament comes about, the tasks are different. There may also be a different number of tasks. Cheating is also considered a normal, traditional part of the Tournament. The winning competitor will receive 1,000 galleons, and the Triwizard Trophy to take back to their school for the next three years. The Mini Junior Tournament has been introduced only recently and consists of tests in Charms, Defence, Flying, Potions, Transfiguration and other main subjects. It may also test things such as bravery, cunning, loyalty and logic. It holds a much smaller prize, and trophy. Otherwise, it is very similar to the Senior Tournament.
The Senior Tournament is extremely dangerous. In 1792, "a cockatrice the champions were supposed to be catching went on the rampage" and all three school heads were injured. In 2001-2002, the contest was held at Véspeíre. In 2004-2005, the contest was held at Carporthia. In 2007-2008 [year 1], the competition was cancelled due to Hogwarts falling grades. The contest will be held at Hogwarts in 2010-2011 [year 4] because of Hogwarts increasing standards. Then in 2013-2014 [year 7], the contest will be held at Véspeíre again. The Champions from each school are selected by the Goblet of Fire.
The three competing schools arrive at the host school on October 1st, just after dusk. Each school brings their best six students in each year. A feast follows, which includes foods from all three countries represented. At this feast, the Goblet of Fire is announced, and the arrangements for entering the contest.
In order to make the selection of champions completely fair, the decision is left up to a powerful magical artefact. The Goblet of Fire is contained in a wooden chest encrusted with jewels. When the casket is tapped three times with the host schools Head teachers wand, it opens. It is a large goblet, filled to the brim with blue flames. Anybody wishing to submit themselves as champion must write their name and school clearly upon a slip of parchment and drop it in the goblet between the 1st and the 31st. On October 31st, Halloween, the Goblet will emit the names of the three pupils it has judged most worthy to represent the three schools. To ensure that no underage student enters, an Age Line is drawn around the Goblet. Nobody in Year Four or below will be able to cross this line. Once a champion has been selected by the Goblet of Fire, they are obliged to see the tournament through to the end. The placing of your name in the goblet constitutes a binding magical contract. There can be no change of heart once you have become a champion. The students must be very sure that they are wholeheartedly prepared to participate before dropping their name into the Goblet. On Halloween, the Goblet is taken into a Hall after the Halloween Feast. It expels a slip of paper for each chosen champion. Once the names have been chosen, the Goblet's flames die out and will not reignite until the next Tournament in three years time.
