First Night, just after the feast. Peter was not allowed to eat in the Hall because he doesn’t belong to a house yet, so ate alone in another side room place.
After the feast and after Nina had been taken to Gryffindor tower
"Take a seat Peter." Professor Hale said, motioning to the empty leather seat in front of her desk that a few minutes before had been occupied by Nina. His chair flattened with a quiet ‘Pfschh’.
Peter looked around the room in awe. He'd never seen, let alone been in a room so lavishly decorated.
“Would you like a drink?” Hale offered.
“No thank you.” Peter declined politely.
“Okay then; down to business. Your mother informed me that for the last three years you’ve been tutored by the mage in the village. But he recently died. Am I right so far?”
Peter nodded.
Hale continued “A place at Hogwarts has been offered to you, and I’m happy to see that you’ve accepted the invitation.” Here she smiled fondly at Peter. “All the paperwork has been done, the only thing left is to sort you.”
Peter nodded, smiling. Now was time to meet the infamous sorting hat. When Hale took the old sorting hat from under her desk, he leaned forward to take it.
“Just pop this on your head and it’ll tell you which house you’re going to be spending the rest of your time here in.” Hale said cheerily, passing the hat over the desk.
Peter slipped it on his head, and darkness encompassed him.
Then a voice spoke.
‘Cairns… Cairns. Where have I heard that name before…? Oh, I know. Your fathers’ side were big on developing ways to make wand-less magic easier. Your father especially was one of the best users of wand-less magic for a long time.’
‘Wait, you knew my father?
‘Well he came to Hogwarts too. Ravenclaw was his house, but I can see already that that’s not where you’re supposed to go. I understand that you like working, and you’re clever, and you like to know things, but you have a low self esteem, you wouldn’t fit in with the other ravens.’
Peter nodded, if he hadn’t realised these things about himself, he did now.
‘What about Hufflepuff?’ the hat asked. ‘They’re hard workers too…’
‘Tell me about the other houses first.’ Peter said.
‘Well the brave at heart, daring and chivalrous go into Gryffindor. Hufflepuffs are just and loyal, patient and true. If you’re truly intelligent, hold a ready mind, are full of wit and are hard working then you belong in Ravenclaw. And Slytherin’s the place to be if you’re cunning, meticulous, have high goals and wish to achieve them as soon as possible. It’s your choice.’
Peter thought about this as he felt the hat probing his head for the qualities that would enable him to be in the best house. He could be daring when he wanted to, but he was also very loyal. However patience was a thing his mother was telling him he didn’t have enough of… ‘Strike Hufflepuff off the list’ Peter told the hat.
The hat moved on his head, as if nodding.
‘Well when you described it, I thought Ravenclaw sounded the best house for me, but you obviously don’t think so; that can go too…’
Peter sighed. He didn’t really want to end up in Slytherin. Wasn’t that the evil house? Or was that only because the way Gryffindors portrayed them? But surely if he was already viewing Slytherin through a Gryffindor’s eyes, he deserved to be placed there? But he did have high goals, and he did like to achieve them…
‘You seem to have made up your mind’ the hat told him.
‘What? Wait!’
‘GRYFFINDOR.’
Peter removed the hat, frowning slightly. If the hat thought it, Gryffindor was obviously the best place for him. At least he wasn’t in Slytherin. Or Hufflepuff for that matter…
Hale clapped her hands, pleased. “Excellent, excellent. I was in Hufflepuff myself, but there we go. I’ll lead you to Gryffindor Tower now, and then you can go to bed. You can meet your new house mates in the morning.”
Peter smiled, somewhat forcefully. Was Gryffindor really the best house for him? Was he brave enough? The hat had certainly said that that was one of the main qualities of a Red and Gold…
