First Night, just after the feast. Nina was not allowed to eat in the Hall because she doesn’t belong to a house yet, so ate alone in that side room place.
After the feast
"Take a seat Nina." Professor Hale said, motioning to an empty leather seat in front of her desk, while she sat down too, her chair flattening with a quiet ‘Pfschh’.
Nina did as she was told, and looked nervously around the room that was so different to her heads office.
“Would you like a drink?” Hale offered.
“Erm, no.” Nina declined, uncertainly, but quickly adding, “Thank you.”
“Okay then; down to business. Now, I heard you had a few little problems at your old school.”
“You could call it that . . . ”
Hale continued as if there had been no interruption. “But we at Hogwarts are prepared to give you a second chance.” Here she smiled fondly at Nina. “All the paperwork has been done, the only thing left is to sort you.”
Nina nodded, ready for the test. She’d already done it once, doing it here, a couple of years later, was no biggee.
But when Hale took a hat from under her desk, Nina just stared at it, only ever so slightly confused(!) What the hell was she supposed to do with the hat!? Transfigure it??
“Just pop this on your head, and it’ll tell you which house you’re going to be spending the rest of your time here in.” Hale said cheerily, passing the hat over the desk.
Nina raised her eyebrows, but took the hat anyway. She slipped it on her head, and darkness encompassed her.
Then a voice spoke to her.
’Well, well, well if it isn’t a Kardakaz. Haven’t seen one of you in a while. I believe your great, great grandfather was the last to enter Hogwarts before you all decided that Canada was for the free.’
Nina just nodded, terribly confused.
’Not afraid to stand up for what you believe in . . . the hat muttered into her head. ’Intelligent. Very intelligent for your age. Ravenclaw maybe? No, no, no . . . not a hard enough worker for that . . . ’
Nina suddenly realised that the hat was talking about herself and started. Don’t work hard?! Who does this hat think he is??
Still muttering, the hat continued. ’Crave social status, not for Hufflepuff. What about Slytherin?’ It said the last part louder, as if asking Nina the question. But then he answered it himself. ’The cunning’s there, and the need for power is too, but they’re not really your crowd. Plus, I don’t think you’re really into sticking up for yourself . . .’
Nina gave the inside of the hat a very incredulous look that clearly said ‘I don’t believe a word you’re saying’, but of course, nobody saw it.
’Only one thing left. Gryffindor it is.’
Gryffindor was voiced to the office and the hat was removed from Nina’s head, leaving the top of her hair slightly ruffled.
Hale clapped her hands, pleased. “Excellent, excellent. I was in Hufflepuff myself, but there we go. I’ll lead you to Gryffindor Tower now, then you can go to bed.”
Nina smiled, uncertain of whether to be happy or not. She’d just have to see what it was like . . .
