Kyli rested her head against Charles' shoulder. There were very few other people in the common room, and with the fire glowing with dying embers, the whole room seemed very peaceful. She sighed gently and snuggled closer to Charles, as he ran a hand through her hair.
Across the room, the portrait swung open, and Meally clambered through, in animated discussion with the ickle girly clan.
'oh mi lawd - you're kidding?'
'she said what?'
'He kissed her!?!?!'
[heehee, the gossips are born]
Kyli buried her face into charles' shoulder. "sssh," she said giggling, "don't let her see me!"
Charles grinned, "It's alright she's gone now" he laughed, and Kyli re-emerged. Neither said anything for a while, lost in thought, content just to be with each other. Kyli was gazing at the fire, Charles was steeling himself.
'ask her'
'but-'
'ask her'
'but-'
'you're going out!!! Just ASK HER!'
'but-'
Charles took a deep breath, fully remembering why he hated Valentines' Day. He was such a wimp... "Kyli-"
"You know, she's been acting so weird lately" Kyli murmured, blissfuly unaware of the important moment that she'd just ruined. Charles tried not to show his frustration, "who?"
"Meally" said kyli, vaguely, as if it was of no importance, and yet there was nothing more important [read it a few times, it might make sense]. "Y'know, she actually told me that she didn't think I should hang around with Sei..."
Charles shifted uncomfortably; despite the casual tone, he felt strangely in the wrong. He was glad that Kyli continued before he was forced to speak.
"said she thought he was dangerous... imagine!"
Charles felt compelled to say something, "well, he is, y'know, quite, unstable..."
The change in the atmosphere was subtle, barely noticeable, but Kyli's voice was slightly tenser when she spoke next. "What do you mean?" it betrayed nothing more that an easy question. on the surface. Charles gave an uneasy shrug. "well, I mean, all that business with the common room, y'know..."
"I can't believe you're saying something like that about our friend" the tension was rising in Kyli's voice.
"Friend?" Charles asked, eyebrows raised suggestively. Kyli looked outraged, "what is that supposed to mean?"
"well, it's just, you do seem to spend an awful lot of time with him..." he said, carefully, acutely aware that he was treading on a minefield, but also wanting to get his point across.
Kyli glared at him, "revising, doing homework. helping him. With school stuff" she said, deliberately, her voice lined with contempt at his suggestion. Charles too felt his temper rising, "helping him?" he scoffed, "for goodness sake Kyli, he practically thrashed you in our mid-term assessment"
Kyli sat up, drawing away from him so that his arm fell awkwardly from around her shoulder, "I cannot believe you are still going on about this pathetic idea of us two together" she said, loud enough to attraction the attention of a few nearby third years. Charles turned red. "look I'm sorry Kyli" he said hastily. Kyli glared at him. "yeh, you should be - dragging up this pathetic nonsense. I thought you'd grown out of this!"
There was a pause, and Charles stared at his feet, still reluctant to grovel, but not wanting to set off any further mines "It's just..." he tried uselessly, "well, you have to admit that, he does seem to come up in conversation quite a bit"
kyli was incredulous, "because you bring him up! You and your stupid ideas"
"not this time" Charles pointed out, calmly, but he was burning inside.
"oh for crying out loud Charles" Kyli half yelled, "would you stop acting so bloody suspicious!"
[erm, que Sei maybe?]
