It was late morning, and kyli had been sent to wake up Meally. She knocked on the door, and when she received no reply, went in. Meally was sleeping peacefully, sucking her thumb with a contented expression on her face.

“mealy, wake up!” Kyli said, reaching out to shake her awake. But on contact, the world around her fell away. She lurched forward, feeling a strange sensation in her stomach. In her hands she held a bubble in her hands. Light bent and curved around it, making the outside glow.

Looking down, she saw a blur of pink fluffy clouds, and realised where she was. She was a spectator in Meally’s dream; she could see Meally below, skipping in the clouds. A bright pink horse galloped past, and Meally danced, badly, round a similar coloured lampost.

“candyfloss land?” she asked, dryly, “I had no idea that you were this sophisticated Meally”

Meally paused a moment in her may pole dance, “kyli?” she asks, puzzled. She looks up, and her eyes meet Kyli’s. “KYLI!”

And the dream stopped. Kyli was wrenched back into the real world with incredible force. And when she got there, Meally was staring at her accusingly from her bed.

“KYLI!” she repeated, “YOU READ MY DREAM!”

Kyli was just staring at Meally in shock. She read her dream… but that hadn’t happened for ages… she’d thought it had stopped!… the dreams were back too… what did this mean? And how come Meally had been able to hear and see her? No-one had seen her before… but they could see her in that other dream too… the one with the darkly dressed men… THe thoughts streamed past her head, to fast for her to be able to focus. Even the voices in her head couldn't get a word in edgeways.

“KYLI!” Meally yelled again, “WHY DID YOU READ MY DREAM?!”

“I didn’t mean to!” Kyli protested. “I just touched you!”

“YOU SHOULD HAVE STOPPED IT!”

“I CAN’T!” Kyli snaps, “It’s not my fault, OK?!”

“you stopped it before” Meally pouted, crossing her arms.

“what’s going on?!” Dad pushed open the door. Kyli remembered her conversation with Chrissy,

“nothing”

But Meally didn’t play along, “Kyli spied on my dreams!” she moaned.

“is this true kyli?”

Kyli nodded, looking at the floor, whilst Dad breathed deeply. Kyli waited for him to speak again,

“has it happened lots?”

Kyli wondered whether she should lie, but decided against it, “once before…” she paused, “and the dreams are back”

Dad frowned, “can’t you stop them?” Kyli just shook her head, then looked up at Dad, pleadingly, “why is this happening to me?” she asked, scared. Dad sighed, “I don’t know Kyli… I just don’t know…”[/i]

[and a few days later...]

It was the last day before the school term started, and the Jones family was seated round the table. There was the usual chaos as eleven children grabbed for food. Mum stared around the family, and sighed contentedly, so, how has everyone’s holidays been?” she asked, and there was a general murmur, from children to reluctant to break off from their food to say anything. Mum sighed. So much for conversation. Noticing that Kyli had momentarily finished eating, she targeted her to reply, “Sei is quite nice, isn’t he?”

“erm, yes. That’s why he’s my friend…”

Meally suddenly began giggling. Kyli elbowed her in the ribs as she stood up to clear away the plates. Wretched sister.

“Meally, why are you laughing?” asked mum.

“nothing”

Mum raised her eyebrows, “riiight”

“mealy just doesn’t have the brain power to stop herself laughing at stupid and insignificant things”

“Kyli, be nice to your sister” reprimanded Mum, “and clear away the dishes”

“at least I don’t go poking around in people’s dreams!” whined Meally. Kyli rolled her eyes. Brilliant.

“what was that?”

At a murderous look from Kyli, Meally kept her mouth shut. “Nothing” she repeated.

The dishes were cleared, the kids made their way from the room, leaving Mum and Dad alone. Kyli felt herself reluctant to leave, and so once she’d shaken off Ellie, she leaned against the door and pressed an ear to the gap between it and the wall.

“oh, and you didn’t think about telling me?!”

“Oh ome on now, you’re overreacting, Suzi!” Sighed dad, loud enough for Kyli to hear, but not yelling.

“no. No I’m not” snapped Mum. There was a slight pause. Then Dad spoke.

“Why are you so uptight about the whole thing?”

“maybe because I don’t want her turning into him” Mum’s reply was a venomous whisper.

“what do you mean?”

“I mean I don’t want Kyli to turn out to be the kind of person who would choose drugs over his own family”

“you just want her to turn into the kind of person who would force someone to make that choice!”

“are you saying that it was my fault?!”

“I’m saying that there is more to the whole story than you choose to remember”

“like what?!”

“like love”

Silence for a few seconds, and from behind the door, Kyli found herself subconsciously digging her nails into her hand. She wasn’t sure why. Maybe to block out the voices of her parents. Maybe to block out the voices in her head. Maybe to stop focusing on the questions that the conversation brought with it.

“you think it was about love?” asked mum in a scornful tone.

“yes. Yes I do” something slammed. A cupboard door. And then Kyli dipped away into the porch, before Dad could notice her as he marched out.

Mum was in asour mood all morning the next day, as she yelled at various children to get up/ out of the way/ packing. She ordered the appropriate children into the car, and drove to the station in a frosty silence. Everyone knew better than to try and drag her out of her foul mood; it would clear up soon enough.

So kyli had the whole journey to reflect on what had happened. She had been expecting something of the sort, after what had happened last time. But, like last time, she had no idea why. why was it that mum freaked out at her dreaming abilities. Why was it that Mum hated the idea that she could read people's dreams. Why had Dad stormed out of the kitchen last night. And what the hell had her parents been talking about

She sighed, and brought her legs up to her knees. She could see mum looking at her, tight lipped, but ignored it. She'd be at school soon.
