Jack opened the door into his dorm and walked in. As he had expected, the ball had been rubbish. If Anya hadn't been so happy, Jack would've left long ago. He went into the bathroom and had a quick shower, then walked back into the dorm. He sat down on his bed for a while. Then he got out a book and started to read. He soon got bored and put it away again. Still no-one had come back from the ball, so he lay down. Without noticing, he fell asleep.
Jack looked around. The bleak landscape was covered in gray hills and a few lonely trees scattered about. Ahead was a figure, to far away to see properly. He began to ran, no idea why. He needed to talk to the person. He ran over the hills, but the person didn't seem to be getting any closer. He stopped. The person stopped. He walked over to the nearest tree and sat down. He close his eyes and put his head in his hands. How was he going to reach them? He noise in the tree above made him look up. Then he stood up, suddenly. "M-madi?"
When she heard him speak, her foot slipped and she fell out of the tree. She stood up. "Thanks for breaking my fall." she said happily.
"Wha-what. . . ! How are you. . . what is going on. . . " he said, looking around. Emadici rolled her eyes.
"Never mind!" she said, fiddling with a pendant round her neck. Jack glanced at it briefly, then looked at it again. "Where did you get that?" he asked, trying to remember where he had seen it.
Emadici's face looked troubled. "I. Don't know. . . I've always had it, i think. . . "
Dusk was falling fast and they needed more time to talk. "When can I talk to you again?" he asked.
"You can talk to me now." she said sitting cross legged on the gray grass. Jack sat down too. "But how? I get the feeling I'm going to be leaving pretty soon. . . "
"You're not going anywhere until we talk." she said, collecting some of the gray twigs off the floor and put them into a pile.
Jack fumbled in his pocket for his wand. It wasn't there. "How you gonna make the fire though. . . ?"
He watched her as she started to make sweeping movements with her arms. Color spread into the bleak land and the sun rose slightly. Her eyes opened again, and she smiled at Jack.
"That should give us plenty of time don't you think?"
Even as Jack nodded, she had started to fade. "Wait- no! Do something to stop it." He said desperately. "You can't go again."
She just looked at him. "You control yourself." She nodded slightly as he reached out.
"Don't leave." he said again. "Don't leave me. . . "
A door opened somewhere below, and Jack looked at the ceiling. 'Why. . . why now? what did she have to say?'
