Kyli entered the library, still reading the letter...
dear Kyla,
thanks for waking me up in the middle of the night- you set off charlie- it better be urgent!
anyway, I think we do know some Carters... a nice little, well not little, Irish family. I have a feeling their name was in the papers some time ago... and they're a bit strange really.
I do remember something about another Carters family- although I have some recollection of some kind of car accident- they're not on my Christmas card list anyhow...
Look, I can't really remember much at two in the morning- but ask me some decent hour, and maybe I'll remember some more. See you at Christmas! Luv Mum.
For once, Kyli felt that it was useful to have a mother as nosey as hers. Actually, her mother wasn't nosey- she just happened to know everything about everyone...

Kyli looked around at the bookshelves. She wasn't 100% sure why she was here- but it had seemed a good place to start. Something was going on with Sei, and she had to know what it was... she didn't believe in any of the palm reading rubbish that Kik had spouted- but those dreams had been scary enough.
But where to start? She needed to find a book with a reference to Carters... according to Mum they had been in the papers- which would mean there had to be some reference to them somewhere. But did that mean she had to look through every book that wrote about wizards?
Ah well, nowhere better to start than the beginning...
She walked over to the nearest eisle- and pulled out "a brief history of notable Witches and Wizards" by "Harold Aidle". her eyes skimmed over the text, searching for a name...

on reaching page 92, Kyli decided there had to be a better way. So, mum had said they were irish... but Sei wasn't Irish- despite obviously having some Irish influence.
What about the other family? the one in the car accident? could that be his? could it be that Kik was right? Kyli knew she had to find out more, but she wasn't going to do it with book. over one thousand pages, in no logical order and with NEWT level jargon? If the information was in there, she wasn't going to find it...
She put the book back, and scanned the shelves. what about "an alphabetical list of contributing wizards?". She pulled it out... desperately hoping that sei's parents had actually contributed something to the wizarding world...

Thank god this book was in alphabetical order! she only had to spend about ten minutes looking at it to find the right section...
she did find a few carters, but she had no way of verifying that it was Sei's parents...
Hamel Carters who invented a biting toaster- that was supposed to be theif proof.
Martin Carters who invented a foldable dinner set that could fit in your pocket
Te Carters who invented some kind of illusion thingy...
and that was it... on the man side. This book was using maiden names for married women, so Kyli wasn't going to learn anything about Sei's mum... She wondered if she should ask Sei. Just to know his dad's name would be useful...

She pulled out a quill and small notebook. She noted down everything about anyone Carters that she could find. It took about three pages- but three small pages of large handwriting. It actually wasn't at all useful... she would have to find some way of slipping parents intot he conversation. hmm....

Kyli shut the book. She still hadn't learnt anything, but she decided to give it a rest. She put it back on the shelf, and selected another. "the Finiis book of records"- that could be useful...
She sat down and began to read. this one was in no particular order, so she had to flick through the whole thing...
She looked at her watch. the stupid thing was busy trying to show her the lyrics of the national athem... sometimes you can have too many features in one gadget. She twiddled a knob on the side, and the face changed to show the time, "twelve o clock" sh[zz]! she'd been reading for hours! she wondered where the others where... she really didn't want Sei to find her here... she shut the book, but slipped a scrap of paper in it, in case she needed to return to it. Then she tucked the notebook away in her bag.
She picked up Snoodles, whose antics were earning disapproving looks from the librarian...

It was just as she was leaving the library that she remembered a conversation with sei, about his dad... he was irish, wasn't he? Kyli's brain was whirring, what had sei said his name was? theo something...
What if his dad was "Te carters" the one who had done the illusiony thing... maybe it was a nickname... her face lit up...
She decided that if her friends weren't missing her now, a few more minutes would hurt. She dashed back to the book cases. now that she had a solid name, she would be able to get somewhere...

She picked up "an alphabetical list of contributing wizards" again, flicked it open to the right page, and stared at it- trying to see what details she could gleam about "Té Carters" Her notebook was out again, and she was scribbling. It wasn't particularly useful:
Té Carters: was a famous illusionist and used a technique he invented called Esiloquism, using magic in a different way. Instead of the conventional means, he used it to create illusions of things and often told stories and plays with this, using Esiloquism to invent and controll the characters and secnery.
Kyli shut the book with a sigh. So Sei's dad was a magician/ story teller. Big deal. She was disappointed- she had expected him to be something more... important. Surely that wasn't it? Kyli wondered whether knowing Sei's mum's name would help. No, she had Sei's dad's name- that was enough... she would just have to dig deeper if she wanted to find what she was looking for.
Of course, that would be so much easier if she actually knew what she was looking for.

Kyli put the book back on the shelf. She'd be down here again, she knew, but right now, she was too hungry to study. She made her way to the great hall.
