[first Sunday of the term, around 1:30pm] ***part one*** Jake and Robyn were walking out of the Great Hall, having just finished lunch. Coincidently, Anya was walking in front of them. They were halfway to the lake, still following Anya, when Robyn spoke. ‘Sorry Jake, I forgot,’ she said quickly, stopping. ‘I’ve got try-outs right now!’ Jake stopped walking too and turned to face Robyn. ‘Good luck! I’ll go meet you at the pitch. Kay?’ Robyn nodded and gave him a quick hug before she dashed off to go grab her broom. She arrived at the pitch and noted that nearly everyone who’d signed up were already there. She walked slightly nervously towards the tall boy wearing the captain’s badge; the one four years previously she’d worn. ‘Robyn Zzyna,’ she said confidently, ‘Seeker or Chaser.’ The boy nodded. ‘Narik Dufaj. Captain.’ He replied somewhat frostily ticking her name off on a piece of parchment and noting the excellent and brilliantly kept broom in her hand. ‘You’re lucky Drint asked Thornton to include first year’s on the team. Personally I think it’s ridiculous!’ Lucky! Yeah, you just keep thinking that.‘You know,’ he continued, ‘you better have talent, otherwise you’ve got no chance. I’m not going to cut anyone unless you seriously impress me.’ His tone of voice did not impress her. But then he thought she was just the mud-blood first year. Narik turned away from her and cleared his throat loudly. ‘Okay! Nearly everyone’s here, so I’m going to start off with a quick warm up. I’m going to split you up into five groups of four or five.’ Robyn knew his strategy. This was to get rid of people who can’t fly well. Next he’d see who could catch on the move. Then he’d watch for good catching, passing, fast movement, fluidity and team work. He’ll’ve chosen the chasers by then, so they could go sit in the stands, after that he’d do the beaters; accuracy, speed and muscle will be good for that, then the keeper; he who lets in least, wins. And the seeker will be last. The first group consisted of only second years. Two [Morfin and Zada] flew very well, but the other two [Marie and Carm] couldn’t even mount because they were too busy giggling. After being shouted at by Narik, they left the pitch waving at the girl who flew well and sat in the stands near Jake. Robyn waved at him, and then her attention was brought back to the pitch when the second group left. This group had four in as well. They all flew well, but she was surprised that the two boys managed to find brooms that supported their bulk. One of them [Adam] was sent to the stand for a bit of dodgy turning. The third group was the fifth years. Three of them flew successfully, but the one of the boys [Jovan] managed to fall off his broom, so was sent to the stands. The penultimate group was made up of the sixth years Narik had bullied into putting their names down. The three boys flew reasonably well, but one of the girls was dreadful and the other looked like she’d never seen a broom before. Consequently, they were sent to the stands. The final group consisted of Robyn and three remaining seventh years. She smirked slightly and mounted as soon as Narik blew the whistle. She was first into the air, soared the highest, did a fast tight loop and sped off to do her lap of the pitch, the fastest out of the four. She landed swiftly and elegantly swung her leg of the broom, looking perfectly at home. She gave another smirk and a big wave to Jake who was gave her the thumbs up. ***end of part one***

***part two*** She turned to Narik who looked down at his list and told the boy closest to Robyn [Raj] to go sit in the stands. Narik let out a deep breath and looked at his list again. Only fourteen out of twenty-one people survived the first test. ‘Now we’re going to get out the Quaffle and do a bit of passing.’ Narik said with a loud, clear voice. ‘Robyn would you go get it quickly please.’ He asked, voice still a bit chilly. She nodded and mounted her broom as fast as possible. Zooming towards the changing rooms, she opened the door, swished her wand at the heavy chest and flew back to the rest of the team, chest in tow. ‘A summoning charm would’ve been faster, but you can’t expect a first year to know how to do that; especially a mud-blood.’ Narik said quietly. They all smirked and Robyn, not at all fussed by the insult, had to make her ears and cheeks flush. Narik flicked his wand and the chest flew open. He picked up the Quaffle with a smug look on his face. ‘We’ll start off with some passing and the ground, and then we’ll mount and do some passing in the air. Still stationary though.’ He threw the Quaffle hard to Zada who caught it with ease and threw it quickly to one of the fifth years. The drill continued until a fourth year [Paris] dropped it. She was sent to sit in the stands. Robyn smirked again, and nearly missed a particularly hard throw from Narik. When anther person dropped the Quaffle [Gary], Narik stopped the drill and told everyone to mount. Robyn Kicked off the ground with the rest of the group. ‘Let’s start. No moving. If someone gives a bad throw, they can go.’ The drill began. A fifth year [Nicolaas] gave a really bad throw. He dropped out of the circle and trudged over to the stands. This sent the next drill into motion. ***end of part two***

***part three*** They would be flying in a line from one end of the pitch to the other. The seventh year girl [Adriana], who Robyn thought had been quite good, dropped the first throw and left the pitch sniffing. They continued the drill for a few more minutes and there was only one bad throw and one dropped catch, both by the same fourth year [Abner]. Narik signaled for everyone to come to the ground, so Robyn tipped her broom down slightly, and the broom descended quickly. She hopped off her broom and waited for the next instructions. ‘I haven’t quite decided which of you will be chaser, but Tom, you’re staying in the team, so if you still want to play chaser and not keeper, you can go to the changing rooms or watch in the stands.’ Narik finished. Reily nodded and walked off the pitch. ‘I’m going to be assessing the Beaters next, so everyone who didn’t want to be a Beater, you can watch either from over there,’ he pointed at the stands opposite the spectators, ‘or on your brooms.’ A fifth and sixth year [Kai and Steve] headed for the stands, but everyone else stayed out. ‘Non-Beaters, you can mount. I’m telling the Beaters what to do.’ Robyn and another girl [Zada] mounted. Robyn saw Narik explaining to the Beaters what they had to do, but before she could try and hear what he was instructing, the other girl was talking to her. ‘So you’re the mud-blood.’ She said. Robyn lifted her chin slightly. ‘Thought so. What did you apply for? Chaser, Keeper or Seeker?’ ‘Chaser and Seeker.’ Robyn said quietly, still trying to listen to Narik. Zada tilted her head to one side. ‘Two positions? And one of them is the hardest. You do know that Quidditch is hard mud-blood.’ ‘Of course I know. And it’s Robyn.’ She replied coldly. ‘I’m Zada. Zada Basely. My families pure. We go way back.’ She said confidently. ‘So’s mine!’ NV wanted to say, but stopped herself. ‘You’re going for Chaser and Seeker too aren’t you.’ She stated. The Beaters had started hitting a Bludger to each other. ‘Yeah, how did you know?’ Zada asked suspiciously. ‘You wrote you’re name down first.’ Robyn said simply. ‘Oh. And you remembered?!’ ‘I have a good memory.’ Robyn said quietly. ***end of part three***

***part four*** Narik had added another Bludger. One of the Beaters got hit in the face by one of them, so got sent to the Hospital Wing. She wouldn’t be on the team. Three left and Narik stopped them hitting the Bludgers. They Bludgers instantly flew up at Robyn and Zada. They dodged both of them, and continued watching the try-out. He gave them more un-audible instructions and the four of them mounted; Narik following the others. The three left were all guys. [Mike, Morfin and Sawyer] The three Beaters chased after the Bludgers and hit them hard in every direction. Narik seemed pleased, but Robyn could tell he need to come up with a drill that would get rid of one of them. Narik beckoned the Beaters over again and gave them more instructions. He got out his wand and conjured six targets for each person. The drill was easy, first to hit all their targets in the middle wins. The second year boy [Morfin] made a practice shot with his bat and nodded. The other two just shrugged. They took off again and five seconds in, one of the second year’s targets smashed. ‘When you hit it in the centre, the target should disappear!’ Narik shouted. ‘Good work Morfin.’ After another five minutes, Morfin had smashed all his and was gliding around the pitch. The other two boy’s [Mike and Sawyer] were smashing Bludgers everywhere. The last of Sawyer’s targets smashed, closely followed by Mike’s last one. Narik flew over to Mike and told him he didn’t make a Beater, but he could still do Keeper try-outs. Mike nodded and headed for the ground. Narik turned to Morfin and the other Beater and told them that unless they wanted to tryout for Keeper, they could go to the stand and watch, or to the changing rooms. Narik called everyone who wanted to be a Keeper back down. There were only three. There was Mike, the other Beater [Sawyer] and a fifth year [Kai]; again, all boys. Robyn looked down at the Beater. She didn’t think much of him. He’d already got his position. He should take it and leave. He was greedy if he wanted to try for Keeper after securing a Beater position. She could tell that Mike and Narik thought along the same lines. Narik gave a signal to Zada and Robyn to come down and got Reily to come back on the pitch. He told them to shoot at the Keepers, trying to score as many as possible. They would each try two times on each Keeper. The one who saves the most would fill the position. ‘Okay Sawyer. You first.’ The other Beater mounted and flew to guard the posts. Zada picked the first Quaffle and scored neatly in the left hoop. Sawyer watched it go through the ring, and Robyn saw his jaw set. She smiled slightly and took the next Quaffle. She also scored, using a nice little feint she picked up six years ago. Tom flew up to Sawyer and threw it hard at the right hoop. Sawyer dived and stopped it going in through the tips of his fingers. Narik nodded and Zada took up her post again. This time Sawyer saved it. Robyn picked up the Quaffle and flew close to the left hoop, but turned quickly and threw the Quaffle out. It curved spectacularly and went in through the right hoop. Tom failed to score again, and Sawyer dismounted looking pretty pleased. Kai went next. He didn’t let in a single one, although Robyn tried her hardest to score. This guy should definitely be Keeper. He saved everything! He’s good. Lastly was Mike. He didn’t really fare much better than Sawyer, letting in one of her’s and one of Zada’s. Narik called them all down. He told Sawyer to stick with his Beater and said to Kai and Mike that Kai would be Keeper as he had saved more. The three boys walked over to the stands. ***end of part four***

***part five*** Narik turned to Robyn, Steve and Zada. ‘You guys said you wanted to be Seekers, so I’ve got a simple enough drill for you. I’m going to give you ten goes at catching the Snitch. The one who catches it most, wins.’ he got the snitch out of the box and turned to face them again. ‘We’re going to wait thirty seconds, then I’ll blow my whistle, you can mount and go find the Snitch. Okay?’ he asked. The three Seekers nodded. He let the Snitch go, it darted off, but Robyn kept her eye on it. In the corner of her eye she saw Steve looking at the floor and Zada trying to be impressive staring the other way after ‘the Snitch’. BEEP! The whistle blew and Robyn mounted faster than you can say Quidditch. She was speeding after the Snitch and in twenty seconds, it was in her hand. She dismounted next to Narik and gave him the Snitch. ‘One to me then?’ she asked brightly. Narik nodded and waited for the other to come back in before letting the Snitch go again. Robyn scored three more times before Zada got her first point. She only needed two more points, then she would get Seeker. After another brilliant and speedy catch, Narik told her the other two would be having a minute head-start this time. She nodded and waited for the second BEEP. When it came, she mounted and circled the pitch, having lost sight of the Snitch when Steve flew in front of it. Suddenly she saw a glint of gold at the other end of the pitch. Unfortunately, Zada saw it at the same time, and she was closer. It doesn’t matter. Just go! Robyn urged her broom on as fast as it would go. She was gaining on Zada and she called out her name. That was enough to break Zada’s concentration. She sped past her and Robyn’s hand closed around the fluttering golden ball. She rose into the air, did a couple of celebratory loops, then a few corkscrews. Finally she landed next to Narik with a grin on her face. Zada dismounted next to her with a sour look on her face. Steve hadn’t wanted to face Narik, so was walking off he pitch already. ‘Well done Robyn.’ Narik said with no tone of joy in his voice whatsoever. Robyn nodded. ‘Seeing as you two were the only good enough Chasers, and you both proved good Seekers, I’ll let you decide who wants to be Chaser and Seeker in each match. Makes it fair. Both of you in the changing rooms now.’ And he walked off. ***end of part five***

***part six*** Robyn laughed happily and waved at Jake again. She pointed at the changing rooms and he nodded. She headed over to the changing room and Zada followed moping. ‘I think you should be Chaser in three of the matches, then be Seeker for one of them. That way, they get to see that you’re good at Seeking too. And that I’m good at Chasing.’ Robyn said cheerfully. ‘If you insist.’ She replied. ‘Okay.’ Narik started. He does say okay a lot. . .‘We definitely have the better team. I watched Gryffindor’s try-outs and they didn’t really choose any new players. [soz 4 pp] So we get good new players, and that means they have to assess you; which means they’ll be too busy assessing to play properly. We can beat them this time. Okay, inside now.’ Narik finished happily, or as happily as he can get. ***end of part six***
