It was the end of the fist day back, and Kyli flopped onto her bed. Wow, first day gone... it had all flown by. She thought of the mounting pile of homework that she could just not be bothered to do. And she thought about all the fun lessons- and seeing mates again. Yes, it was going to be a good term. It took a while to get to sleep- she had to get used to sleeping in a fourposter again.
A boy is sitting on a wooden fence. On one side of him is a field of sheep, the other is a imposing hill, topped by a row of trees. The sky is crystal clear, the sun blaring down brightly on every blade of grass. The boy’s legs are swinging and he is humming a lullaby softly. His black hair sticks up in tufts, as the sun illuminates the gold streaks in it. Kyli recognises him straight off; Raika.
Just as she is musing how like his adult self Raika looks at six, a girl comes up the shabby track behind him. She is quite short, with long hair, that is falling over her shoulders in dark brown ringlets. Kyli is close enough to see her eyes; deep, dark mysterious things, framed with long black lashes.
She opens the gate, and the whole fence shudders as she does so. Raika frowns, and stops chewing his lip to turn to look at her. He cocks his head to one side when he sees her, “who are you?” he asks. The girl steps through the gate nimbly, and stands in front of Raika, “Siciletta Demohra Eidosa” she says, proudly. Raika swings his legs once more, and then slides off the fence, “erm, hi…” he pauses, “so, how come I’ve never seen you before?”
“we’re on tour,” sicil says, “we only got here this afternoon, and we’ll probably be gone by the end of the summer”
“so, you some kind of circus then?” asks Raika, and Sicil nods, “you should come to one of our shows”
Raika stares at his feet, “I’m not sure my dad would let me” he says. Sicil’s face drops, “oh, ok…” there is a few seconds quiet, before she says, “so what’s your name then?”
But before he can reply, a shout is heard across the field, “SECIL!”
Secil starts, and her head jerks towards where the shout has come from. She looks at Raika, apologetically, “sorry… I have to go” and then she is gone- over the hedge and skipping back towards the road. Raika watches until she disappears into the horizon, and then he sighs. Shrugs. Gets back on the fence. And starts humming.
The vision blurs, and Kyli finds herself standing in front of a marquee. Raika is leaning against a pillar, in the dusky evening light. His shouders are back, his stance is chilled. But he is chewing his lip, and his forehead is furrowed. Even nervous, he still looks cute as a seven year old. The reason for his nerves becomes apparent; Secil appears from behind the marquee.
She is looking absently around, as if she’s looking for something, but isn’t desperate to find it. Her face breaks into a smile when she sees Raika, and she runs over, looking even more cute as the wind snatches back the ends of her long black hair, and blows about her knee length skirt whilst she runs. She stops, just in front of Raika, panting slightly. “It’s you!” she says, still smiling, “the guy from the field… I haven’t seen you in ages!”
Raika shrugs, “I guess you’re seeing me now…”
“Shame you’ve only just got here- our final performance is in about five minutes- and I need to get backstage”
“final performance?” Raika’s face drops, “you’re going?”
Secil nods, “yeh” she says softly. They face each other, neither one sure of what to say. Then Secil speaks again, “well, I guess. I’d better, get going…” She pauses, and Raika looks as if he is going to saying something. But then he changes his mind, and just nods. Sicil smiles again, and then turns to leave.
“wait!” says Raika, biting the bullet. Sicil, who has made a few dainty steps away, turns back, “yeh?”
Raika extends his arm. In his fingers is clasped a brilliant white lily, in full bloom. He smiles, “here…” he says, turning red at the tips of his ears from embarrassment. Sicil smiles perfectly, and her cheeks flush a little as she takes the lily. “thanks…”
Another pause, and then she skips off, the lily entwined with her fingers. And as she disappears into the marquee, so the vision disappears in front of kyli.
Raika is sitting in the kitchen. Sicil enters the kitchen, and moves over the cupboard. Raika watches her.
Turning back to the centre of the kitchen, with a biscuit in one hand, she notices Raika still looking at her, and cocks her head to one side, “what are you looking at?”
Raika pauses for a moment, before saying, “you don’t remember do you?”
Sicil looks slightly taken aback, and her forehead creases with a frown, “remember what?” and Raika shakes his head, and turns away from her, “doesn’t matter…”
Kyli is awake, trying to figure out what her dream meant. BUt she never could....
It was the second night, and before she fell asleep, she hoed that she wouldn't have any more dreams; past of future. did it work? fat chance...
Raika is sitting in a corner. The room, is dark, so Kyli can’t make out the details. He is staring at a wooden board, remorsely. Kyli realises that the something it missing; his dowsing crystal. Kyli watches him for a second, but then her attention turns to the back of the room. A shape is appearing from the shadows. The hooded man she say in Sei’s ‘soul’ steps dorward. At least she thinks it is him.
He steps closer to Raika, but Raika doesn’t notice him. When he is closer to Raika, he speaks, “hello Rikarra”
Raika jumps slightly, and look at the hooded man, puzzled, “it’s Raika, mate… and how do you know who I am??”
“I’ve known who you are for a long time” the hooded man says, with an air of superior mystery, “and I know all about your dowsing abilities…”
Raika looks slightly startled, “how…”
The hooded man waved a dismissive hand, “there are quite a few things that i know, how i have come to know them are really of no concern to you”
“erm, ok,” said Raika, still unsure what was going on. The hooded man pulled something from his pocket. A silver chain, attatched to a large black crystal. The hooded man held the pendant out to Raika. Raika took it, “that’s- that’s my fathers!”
The hooded man nodded, “but he didn’t use it, did he?” and Raika shook his head, “no, no he didn’t. He wasn’t all that keen on dowsing…”
“but you were, and are?”
“yes… It just seemed natural I guess… what’s this all about?”
“because, rikara, you are a part of something… something much bigger than dowsing
“like randomly appearing in people’s houses?”
The hooded man rolled his eyes, “definitely Rikkara”
“look mate, it’s Raika. And what the hell are you doing here anyway?”
“I cannot reveal that to you at the moment, I am needed elsewhere, but I shall return at some point.” The hooded man pulled a book from his robe. It was black, with a strange symbol on the front. Raika took it, puzzled, “what-“ but before he could finish, the hooded man had gone. Disappeared.
Kyli had been expecting something similar after the scene in Sei’s ‘soul’. But Raika obviously hadn’t been. He stared at the spot where Cocul had stood, looking completely bemused. He looked from the crystal to the book, frowning. “part of something… bigger?” he murmured.
Kyli woke, and began puzzling. dowsing...? it came back to her. That was what Sei was reading about... what did that mean? yet another thing she couldn't figure out. the list was growing...
