Slowly he managed to bring himself down from the hysterical high and took a deep breath to regain the oxygen he'd lost. With a wide smile still on his face he watched the last of her giggles, strangely intrigued by her laughter. The way it changed her features and the way it could make anyone seem instantly more approachable and friendly if done genuinely. And the way that her eyes, and everyones, lit up with a different kind of magic to that which they learned in lessons; and how, when she had breath to spare, the laughter was almost melodic.

Kyli's laughs faded away, and she felt herself regaining the capability to breathe. Slightly dizzy from her bout of hysteria, she stared at Sei, feeling strangely out of touch with reality, her brain fuzzed, as she regarded him, her head to one side, as he regarded her- not saying anyhing for fear of peircing the film of peaceful joy that had settled mistily on the air after their fit of laughter, like dew settles on the morning grass after the night has passed.

Still with that curious feeling of elation that the laughter had given him, he found his gaze happily resting on her. It was odd, the way that it didn't feel strange to have such a silence after their laughs which made a considerably greater amount of noise in comparison. Still just watching her, he noticed it was a happy silence; not like the ones after storms, or after a scream, the ones that went on forever while you wish they wouldn't. He looked a little further into her eyes, scanning for any traces of pity that he might have missed whilst busy laughing, and, to a small surpirse finding none, decided that it wouldn't be so dreadful if the silence remained, well, silent.

Kyli too allowed the silence to continue to wind its way around them, not feeling the slightest part bitter at its lingering. For she was too caught up in the moment too care, too busy being silent to want to make a sound. She was too fixed in returning Sei's gaze, too engulfed in the calm, too wrapped in the surrealness. Too content.
She felt a strange sensation at the back of her kneck, a small prickling- not uncomfortable, just noticeable. Looked in this gaze they were sharing she became aware of just how different his eyes were. Now they were vacant of all hostility, all suspcion, all gaurdedness. Even the glaze of pain so characteristic normally, had dimmed, and become nothing more than just a blurred ripple in the background.

A second later, the panic light switched on inside Sei's mind. How long had he been staring at her like this? Was her expression now one of 'okaay you can stop looking at me now' ?, and why had she been staring at him so long as well? Was there something on his face? Was she trying to scare him? Or poke fun? Why was he still staring? Stop looking. Stop looking!!! Forcing his eyes to the floor he but a hand to the back of his neck, his discomfort showing, the laughter gone. Had she just been laughing at him? Had she been staring nastily? He chewed his lip sadly trying to figure it out.

Kyli watched himlower his head with a pang. It was like she'd subconsciously been hoping the silence would go on forever- cliche as it might be. And then he'd gone and broken it...
Stop being stupid, they couldn't have sat in silence much longer anyway. And it's not like the silence was of any importance. Just straing at eah other in silence- where was the magic in that? So why was she so disappointed? For crying out loud, why the hell was she disappointed!? What was so important about silence?!
She cut her thoughts short, realising that she probably needed to move now. With asubconcious flick of her hair as she reawakened her muscles, she picked up ehr muffin and picked at itabsent-mindedly, trying to work out whether she should say something. The previous silence had been replaced with another kind, one that threatened to splinter awkwardly at any moment unless broken soon.

"I'd uhm, better go finish that defence against the dark arts homework. . . It's in for after lunch.. uh, -. . ." He got up and made a hasty exit.

Kyli watched him, wondering at how a few seconds of silence could unnerve him so much. The barriers had crept back in, she noticed with regret. But, maybe, just maybe, they weren't as strong as before. Perhaps they would be easier to evade now, perhaps he'd even enjoyed letting them slip.
Or perhaps he'd not. Perhaps he preffered to hide away behind them, skulking in their shadow. Perhaps now they were even stronger.
Kyli turned away from his back, preffering not to stare at is exiting figure. Preffering to avoid the perhapses, the maybes, the questions. What did it matter anyway? what did a few seconds beyond their occurence? What did a small slip of barriers matter- when those barriers had been in place for years?
Nothing.
The fire flickered limply. Kyli picked at her muffin.
