"Oh, er, nothing." Came the slightly embarassed reply.
"Oh, um, ok."
They stared around the hallway for a moment, in an awkward silence.
Simulatiously they started speaking.
"Would you-" /"I was-"
"Oh-" / "Sorry-"
"No um-" / "I mean-"
"You first." Herschal said, embarassed.
"No, it wasn't important anyway. You say what you were going to say."
"Oh."
Herschal scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably.
"Ummm. Ok. Well. Um. Stop me if you think I'm being completely mat- mad. I mean mad..."
"Ok..." Grady replied, looking curious.
"Well, you see. I was, um. No, no. Don't worry. It's silly."
"No, go on. It doesn't matter if it sounds silly."
"Yeah... it does... cause, then. You'll think I'm wierd- and we won't be friends anymore- and-"
"I'll always be your friend Herschal. Have you killed someone or something?" Grady asked, worried now.
"No- no..."
"Well then. Speak away."
"Ok. Right. Ummm." He dampened the corners of his mouth to stall for time while he tried to collect his thoughts. "Ok. So... Well, I never meant it when I was teasing you the other night by the way- like, about the age thing. I mean, well, you're not that young- I mean- not that you're old- well- er- not that I'm old either- I mean. Well..."
A flicker of hope appeared in Grady's imagination and he changed his stance slightly and relaxed the slightly skeptical expression on his face.
"Herschal?"
"Um! I mean! Well- If you're not, um, totally against things like this- that is- I er- er- er- I mean, our age gap isn't that big. And um- so, well, if you er, aren't- ummm, that is. Err, would you, um, like to, er, go out this weekend? I mean, um, together."
Grady practically fainted, but managed to reply: "I'd love to!"
"Omygodseriously?" Herschal could have died from relief. "I mean like, um, as a date. You know?"
"Yes." Grady beamed.
"Oh, ah, well. That's fantastic!"
A loud crash and giggle came from inside the classroom.
"Oh! My class! I need to get back to them!"
"Oh, yes. Er, well. See you tonight then?"
"Definately! Bye!"
Grady turned, barely containing his happiness, and walked back to the classroom.
"Oh, um, ok."
